Strange Ruminations #5: Titanic Toddlers and Alien Antics

Hey there, weirdos!  I've got some seriously exciting stuff to share with you in this month's newsletter. You know how sometimes reality and fiction start to mirror each other in the weirdest ways? Well, that's exactly what's happening with Brian K. Vaughan's "We Stand On Guard" right now. The current U.S.-Canada trade tensions have sent this dystopian gem's sales through the roof, especially north of the border. Talk about life imitating art! But that's just the beginning of what's cooking in our comic world. I've got the inside scoop on the upcoming Green Lantern Corps series (spoiler alert: it's looking amazing!), some crucial news about TwoMorrows Publishing that needs our attention, and a deep dive into the incredible legacy of Jean Frisano - a artist who brought Marvel's heroes to life for French readers in ways you wouldn't believe. Plus, I'm getting personal with you all once again by sharing one of the comics that s...

The Top 10 George Pérez Comic Book Projects

To me, comic book legend George Pérez wasn't just an artist – he was a visual storyteller who could bring entire universes to life in my mind with his pencil. His intricate artwork, dynamic layouts, and ability to handle massive casts of characters made him one of the industry's most influential creators. After his passing in 2022, his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists. Here's Into the Weird’s ranking of Pérez's ten greatest contributions to comic book history. 10. The Avengers Vol. 3 (1998-2000) In the late 1990s, George Pérez returned to The Avengers (he had previously worked on the title in the 1970s) for the relaunch of The Avengers Vol. 3 (1998), teaming up with writer Kurt Busiek. This run was a triumphant return to form, bringing the team back to its classic roots after Marvel Comics’ polarizing Heroes Reborn event. Busiek and Pérez reestablished the Avengers as Earth’s mightiest heroes, balancing high-stakes action with deep character-dri...

Thoughts on the Fuzzy Elf, Into the Weird's Favorite X-Man There was a time when Marvel Comics did the unthinkable. They killed Nightcrawler. Yes, Kurt Wagner—the soul of the X-Men, their conscience, their swashbuckling, teleporting, faith-filled heart—died in X-Force Vol. 3 #26. I was outraged then, and honestly? That outrage still lingers. But today, my love for Nightcrawler isn’t tangled in grief. Instead, it’s intertwined with awe for how Marvel has (finally) done right by one of their greatest characters. Back then, I was furious. Killing Nightcrawler felt like a cheap move, a marketing stunt for shock value. Sure, he sacrificed himself to save mutantkind’s so-called messiah, Hope Summers, but did Marvel have to take him of all people? Why not someone less integral to the X-Men’s heart and soul? Bastion, the glorified Sentinel, didn’t even deserve to be the one to kill him! Kurt deserved better. But let’s focus on where we are now. Nightcrawler did return, as all great comi...
